NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) guide

A PPC is a season ticket for NHS prescriptions in England. For people near Universal Credit earnings cliffs, it can be safer than ticking the UC exemption every month.

If your overtime, tips or hours bump you over the UC threshold some months, a Prescription Prepayment Certificate can stop wrong exemption claims and later NHSBSA fines.

CertificateTypical England price
3-month PPC£32.05
12-month PPC£114.50
12-month Direct Debit£11.45 × 10
Single prescription item£9.90

Who the PPC is for

Always check whether you are entitled to free prescriptions another way before buying — use the NHSBSA eligibility checker.

How to use a PPC at the pharmacy

When your PPC is active, tick the Prepayment Certificate box (commonly Box F), not Universal Credit. Keep the purchase receipt — it helps with enquiry letters or a PCN challenge.
